Sam Bigio is creative director and interior design stylist known for his refined visual sensibility and deep-rooted expertise in design history. He holds a Master’s degree in the History of Decorative Arts and Design from Parsons School of Design and the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

In 2017, Bigio founded Monstruosus, a studio dedicated to designing and crafting premium ceramic planters for indoor and outdoor use. As the brand’s creative director, he oversees every aspect of the creative process—from product design and material development to visual storytelling, brand identity, and campaign art direction. Under his leadership, Monstruosus has become known for its sculptural forms, rich matte glazes, and restrained aesthetic rooted in Mid-Century American modernism. Each collection is guided by Bigio’s commitment to quality, proportion, and atmosphere, and designed to enhance the presence of plants without overpowering them.

Prior to launching Monstruosus, Bigio served as a styling director at Herman Miller, where he helped shape the brand’s visual identity across showrooms, temporary 3-D spaces, and photo campaigns. His role involved conceptualizing and styling showrooms that captured the essence of Herman Miller’s iconic modernist furniture, often blending historical reverence with a fresh, contemporary eye. It was during this time—seeking planters that could complement such meticulously considered environments—that the initial idea for Monstruosus took root.

Bigio’s work reflects a deep understanding of materials and context, along with a fluency in both historical reference and contemporary design culture. His collections continue to resonate with design professionals, collectors, and discerning clients worldwide.
